SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER

Substance use disorder (SUD) is an umbrella term for conditions in which your mental health, daily life, and/or relationships are negatively impacted by your use of substances such as alcohol, illicit drugs, or a misuse of medications.

Substance use disorders can impact anyone — individuals and families or whole communities alike.

If you have, or believe to have substance use disorder, Rivia Mind is here to help guide you to the treatment you need and deserve.

How Common is SUD?

Unfortunately, SUD cases continue to rise. In the United States, two-thirds of adults say either they or a family member have dealt with problems pertaining to drug or alcohol use in recent years.

Sadly, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also reports that overdose deaths reached a new high in 2022.

On the positive side, SUD is treatable; if the person is open to receiving help.

Diagnosis

People with substance use disorder (SUD) may be aware of their problem and have tried to cut down or stop using, but are not able to. SUD can cause physical, psychological, and interpersonal problems such as:

  • Cravings and urges to use the drug or substance
  • A desire to quit or cutback but an inability to follow through
  • Difficulty managing responsibilities at work, home, or school due to the substance
  • Continued use of the substance even when it causes relationship problems
  • Avoiding social activities and staying home, using the drug or substance
  • Continued use even when you know it has a negative impact on your mental health
  • Consuming an increasing amount of the substance to get the desired effect
  • Taking one substance to get over the effects of the other

If these issues sound familiar to you, then you might have a substance use disorder.

The first step towards recovery is asking for help. At Rivia Mind, we offer a free 15-minute phone consultation, or you can schedule an appointment below.
