We’re delighted to feature Maya Buchhalter, PMHNP-BC, in this week’s Rivia Mind Clinician Spotlight. Maya brings a blend of warmth, creativity, and deep clinical commitment to her work, shaped by early experiences that continue to fuel her passion today.
Let’s dive into Maya’s therapeutic approach and unique insights below.
Specialty & Approach to Therapy
To Maya, support extends far beyond traditional therapy. She believes healing happens through collaboration, creativity, and connection – incorporating social skills, art, and meaningful interests into care. It’s an approach rooted in her humanistic values: every person deserves space, respect, and the opportunity to become their most authentic self.
“I’ve always been struck by how sterile, punitive, and disconnected psychiatric care can feel and historically has been,” she explains. “That’s why I work so hard to create something different.” For Maya, care is warm, down-to-earth, playful, practical, educational, and deeply real. She sees it as a privilege to be someone’s safe space, and that shows up in every interaction.
Advice for Those Seeking Therapy
If you’re new to mental health care, Maya encourages you to think of treatment as a chance to flourish. “It’s an opportunity to understand yourself more and grow,” she says—a chance to learn, explore, and strengthen parts of yourself that deserve attention and compassion.
Finding the right provider sometimes doesn’t happen on the first try, and Maya wants people to feel empowered in that process. “Your very first provider may not be the best fit, but there is a provider out there who is right for you,” she reminds us. Her rule of thumb: look closely at the clinician’s style of therapy. The approach should feel aligned with what you want, need, and respond to.
Finding Balance Through Self-Care
Maya finds comfort and grounding in her rhythms. After a long day, she loves taking a stroll with her sweet dog, unwinding with a little reality TV, and ending the night with a chapter or two of a good book. For Maya, self-care goes deeper than routine. It’s about slowing down. Living the fast-paced NYC “9–5 and 5–9” lifestyle, Maya has been embracing what she calls rest as resistance. Journaling and scrapbooking have become meaningful practices: a chance to reflect, get creative, disconnect from screens, and simply breathe.
