Clinician Spotlight: JoAnna Luongo

Clinician Spotlight JoAnna Luongo

JoAnna Luongo, PMHNP-BC, believes mental health care works best when it treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. Drawing from experience in emergency medicine, forensic nursing, and private practice, she brings a trauma-informed, patient-centered approach to every session. JoAnna finds deep meaning in helping patients feel safe, heard, and empowered to move forward. Her work centers on building therapeutic relationships grounded in compassion, consistency, and practical tools for lasting change.

Specialty & Approach to Care

JoAnna specializes in supporting young adults and college students experiencing anxiety, mood disorders, burnout, and trauma-related conditions. She is particularly attentive to how life stressors like trauma history, sleep, nutrition, and overall wellness shape mental health, with special sensitivity to women’s needs.

Before becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner, JoAnna worked as a registered nurse in a high-acuity emergency department. There she developed strong skills in assessment, crisis management, and multidisciplinary communication. She also worked as a SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) RN, a role that combines clinical care with advocacy. These experiences profoundly shaped her approach to trauma-informed care and therapeutic relationships.

As JoAnna explains, “Mental health looks differently on everyone, everyone has their own story, their own process to healing. Consistency is key. Celebrate the small wins that we don’t often notice daily. Give yourself grace.

She emphasizes that her goal is for every patient to feel seen and cared for. “When patients feel heard and supported, meaningful and lasting healing becomes possible.”

Advice for Those Seeking Mental Health Care

JoAnna acknowledges that seeking mental health care can feel vulnerable. She encourages individuals to approach the process with self-compassion and to find a provider who makes them feel safe, respected, and genuinely heard. She comes to each session with compassion, curiosity, and without judgment; she practices what she preaches, often by sharing insights drawn from real life.

Finding Balance Through Self-Care

Outside of her work, JoAnna’s self-care looks a little different every day. She recharges through skincare, exercise, journaling, and moments of quiet. Whether that’s meditation, reading, listening to her favorite podcast, or unwinding with a TV show or movie. For JoAnna, tending to her own well-being is part of how she shows up fully for her patients.
