Tips To Reduce Stress When You’re A Caregiver

November is #NationalFamilyCaregiversMonth. Whether you’re taking care of young children, the disabled or the elderly, being a caregiver renders some of the biggest rewards as well as the biggest challenges. Stress and anxiety can take an emotional and physical toll.

Here’s four ways to reduce and manage caregiver stress so you can take better care of yourself and the ones you love:

  1. Learn: Knowing what to do and how to do it can seem overwhelming for first time caregivers. Take the time to find relevant classes on how to care for loved ones like those offered at the Family Caregiver Alliance.
  2. Organize: Caregiving is a job, treat it like one. Organize your workspace and develop a routine. You’re not going to be able to anticipate everything, but getting and staying organized will help when you hit the big hurdles.
  3. Self-Care: As you build your routine, don’t forget to carve out time for yourself. Whether it’s a scheduled daily workout or just a quick walk around the block, give yourself a break.
  4. Support: Don’t hesitate to ask for and accept help because your feelings and concerns are valid. Build a network of family, friends, or find a group. Many communities and organizations offer caregiver support groups whether in-person or online. Psychotherapy can also be valuable. Caregivers are at increased risk of depression and a therapist can help you work through issues and learn coping mechanisms.
