Romi Lyallpuri, PMHNP-BC, is a psychiatric nurse practitioner who works with a wide range of mental health conditions across the lifespan and is the newest clinician at Rivia Mind. He has worked as a professor of psychology at the City College of New York. We’re excited to welcome Romi to our team. We recently talked with Romi about his career in psychology and his approach to therapy. Here’s what he had to say.
Specialty & Approach to Therapy
Although Romi works with a wide range of mental health conditions, he has mostly worked with young adults and conditions like mood disorders and schizophrenia. “Therapy plays a vital role in improving emotional regulation, symptom management, and overall quality of life,” he explains. “It provides individuals with the tools and strategies needed to navigate their challenges, fostering resilience and long-term mental health stability.”
Other conditions he has experience working with include:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Bipolar disorder
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Adjustment disorder
“I see psychiatry as both a science and an art, and I strive to continually refine my craft,” he says. “Therefore, my approach to care is collaborative and highly individualized, centered on each patient’s unique goals and needs. I believe patients are the experts in their own lives, and my role is to guide, empower, and support them in their journey toward improved mental health. I prioritize creating a space where patients feel heard, valued, and supported.”
A strong therapeutic alliance based on trust and open communication is key to Romi’s approach. “My goal is to create a professional and approachable environment where patients feel safe discussing their concerns without fear of judgment.”
Advice To Those Seeking Therapy
As someone whose career is dedicated to helping people through therapy, Romi understands how critical mental health support can be…and how big of a step it is to reach out for the first time. “Seeking mental health care for the first time can feel daunting, but it’s an empowering and important step toward prioritizing your overall well-being,” he says. “My advice is to be open and honest about how you’re feeling and to share any concerns you may have with your provider, even if it’s about the care itself.
“It’s also important to remember that building trust and rapport with any health provider can take time. Be patient with the process and give yourself the space to feel comfortable and connected. Choosing a provider who aligns with your needs and values is key, so don’t hesitate to ask questions or explore options until you find the right fit.”
Which comes to the next question: how do you find a provider that aligns with your needs and values? “Consider their specialty and approach to care and determine if it aligns with your own goals. Look for someone who listens, communicates openly, and makes you feel comfortable. Trust and rapport are essential in a therapeutic relationship, so don’t hesitate to explore different providers until you find the one who feels right for you. If something is not working as you like, that’s okay — there are always options.”
Finding Balance through Self-Care
At the end of the day, everyone needs to unwind and practice self-care to refill the well. For Romi, that often involves spending quality time with family and friends, going for walks and exercising, and unwinding with hobbies, “such as playing video games, watching sports, or watching movies/shows. I also find value in personal growth, whether through reading, learning about investing, or exploring new skills.”
