Clinician Spotlight: Keisha Stephens, PMHNP-BC

Clinician Spotlight: Keisha Stephens

Join us in welcoming our newest psychiatric nurse practitioner, Keisha Stephens, PMHNP-BC! In our latest clinician spotlight, we spoke to Keisha about her work in mental health and her approach to care. Here’s what she had to say:

Specialty & Approach To Therapy

Keisha specializes in co-occurring disorders, which refers to the presence of two or more distinct mental health conditions or substance use disorders occurring at the same time within an individual. “Therapy can help to explore how to manage substance use, triggers, urges as well as explore root causes of substance use.”

She utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) to effectively address co-occurring disorders. “Additionally, I am trained in motivational interviewing, which helps clients navigate challenges and make meaningful changes.”

Advice To Those Seeking Care

Seeking mental healthcare for the first time doesn’t have to be a rush. In fact, Keisha suggests giving it time.  “We can go at the pace that’s most comfortable for you. Everything does not resolve in the first visit, so be patient.  Practice self-care between visits.” She also suggests not stressing when you have to change providers. “Not every provider will be a good fit, and that’s okay.”

Finding Balance through Self-Care

Self-care helps to re-energize and stabilize clinicians just as it would anyone else. For Keisha, self-care involves taking care of both body and mind. “I take long walks with my dog, practice meditation,  and I make sure I get plenty of sleep!”
