Our next clinician spotlight is Rayna Friedman, LMSW! Rayna is one of our newest therapists and we’re so happy to have her on the Rivia Mind team! We recently spoke with Rayna about what brought her to this place in her career and to Rivia Mind. Here’s what she had to say:
Education and Background
With an interest in both art and psychology, Rayna began studying marketing at the University of Maryland. However, after working in the non-profit space for a number of years, she decided to change course and pursue mental health and therapy. She completed the LMSW program at Columbia University and even interned at Rivia Mind for her second-year master’s program.
“I have always been interested in what, how and why people think/behave the way they do, or in other words human nature,” Rayna explained. “This deep-seeded interest along with my love of helping others and empathetic nature led me to this field.
Specialty & Approach to Therapy
Rayna’s clinical interests are typically related to trauma, depression, and anxiety. “I believe that most psychological problems stem from some form of trauma, and I am a person who is compelled towards the root causes of issues. As it turns out, I also have a relatively ‘easy’ time hearing and dealing with traumatic events and so I felt I ought to use that trait to help benefit others.”
Trauma, in particular, is something that Rayna focuses on: “Trauma typically occurs when one encounters an event that completely obliterates one’s preconceived world view. For many, processing their trauma can be scary and confusing but addressing it with someone who has no emotional ties to their previous history can provide much needed catharsis.”
She describes her philosophy of care as: inviting, curious, open, empathetic, and hopeful. “When it comes to trauma, I would describe my approach as unassuming. I want clients to know that whatever trauma they have experienced, or whatever trauma they have caused another will not be judged. Rather, these are experiences and emotions we can be curious about together and try to understand.”
Joining Rivia Mind
Rayna started out at Rivia Mind as an intern, and she’s excited to join the team as a full-time clinician. Her favorite thing about Rivia Mind’s culture, she said, is the commitment to education. “The sharing of resources in this organization is wonderful!”
Advice To Those Seeking Mental Healthcare
For those who are seeking mental healthcare for the first time, Rayna advised, “Take your time, and don’t be afraid to ask questions of your provider.” It’s important for patients to know that they are the expert in their own lives. “You are looking for a partner/guide to help you in exploring yourself and provide opportunities for self-improvement.”
Self-Care For the Clinician
Winding down from the end of a work day is important for everyone, but for Rayna, that especially means “making sure I intellectually engage with the world around me.” In her down time, she likes to watch historical documentaries, as well as read both nonfiction and fiction.
