Clinician Spotlight: Reshma Haque, LMSW

Clinician Spotlight: Reshma Haque

Reshma Haque, LMSW, is a therapist with experience working with individuals who have experienced significant emotional, psychological, or physical trauma and is a new provider with Rivia Mind. We spoke with Reshma recently about her therapeutic approach and process. Here’s what she had to say:

Specialty & Approach To Therapy

Reshma describes trauma as the area that she has focused on the most. “Therapy allows [individuals who have faced trauma] to process painful experiences, understand how they’ve shaped their thoughts, behaviors, and emotional responses, and develop healthier coping mechanisms in a safe space. This also extends to working with clients and families who have been affected by intergenerational trauma. Therapy allows for exploration into the rich history of our pasts and understanding how it impacts the dynamics of our present.”

She describes her approach to therapy as “holistic and intersectional.” She utilizes an integrative approach to provide comprehensive care, combining CBT and DBT skills, psychodynamic techniques, elements of polyvagal theory, and trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT). “My approach is also solution-focused and strength-based, designed to address the unique and authentic needs of my clients.”

Advice To Those Seeking Mental Health Support

The first thing Reshma says she would say to someone seeking mental healthcare for the first time is to acknowledge their courage. “Reaching out for help and pushing yourself to explore something new is brave and an important first step in self-care. I would also say to be curious. The therapy world is vast, with many providers and types of treatments—it can be overwhelming. Be curious and open to discovering who or what approaches might be the right fit for you. Be curious about yourself in this journey of self-discovery, and be open to what you find.”

She also notes that therapy is a collaborative process and works best when clients give feedback. “You have the right to express concerns and provide feedback as you learn what works for you and what doesn’t, so please don’t be afraid to speak up!”

But what about searching for a therapist for the first time? “A good place to start is by reflecting on your needs and mental health goals in therapy. What kind of support are you looking for? What would you hope to work on? Understanding your needs will help guide you in searching for a provider who may be a good fit.” Furthermore, Reshma suggests trusting your instincts. “The therapeutic relationship is key to successful treatment, so consider whether your therapist allows you to feel safe, heard, and validated during your time together.”

Finding Balance through Self-Care

Self-care looks different for everyone, so what does it look like for a therapist like Reshma, who spends so much of her day helping her patients learn to care for themselves emotionally?

“Self-care for me looks like engaging in activities that intentionally make me slow down,” she says. “I try to shift gears from prioritizing productivity and results to experiencing play and joy in the small things. Activities like reading, crocheting, and writing postcards are slow-paced and allow me to be more intentional about my time and comfort. Physical markers of relaxation, such as turning on mood lighting or making a warm cup of tea, also help me wind down from my day and signal to my body that it’s time to relax.
